Preservation Hall Jazz Band spread holiday cheer with a Tiny Desk Concert

Last winter New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band stopped by the NPR Music offices to film a Tiny Desk Concert, holiday style. A tuba-playing Santa and his crew of brass musicians cover songs like Bill Evans’ “Sugar Plum” and the jazzed-up “Happy Holiday,” ho ho ho-ing and joking that they are from the South Pole. Read more

Major Handy

Major Handy talks childhood memories with Living Blues; watch him play “Down On the Bayou”

Major Handy is a true “musician’s musician” in the world of zydeco.  A 2010 article in Living Blues magazine spotlighted the Lafayette / St. Martinville, Louisiana native and the many contributions he’s made to music during his 40 year career, detailing the time Otis Redding asked a 15 year old Major to play in his band and the 12 years he spent with Rockin’ Dopsie. He also performed his song “Down On the Bayou” for WXPN late last month. Read more.
