Nick Spitzer, host of American Routes on WWNO in Louisiana, sat down with the late and  legendary zydeco artist Beau Jocque in this archival interview from 1998. Following a performance of “Jean peut pas danser” (“Johnny Can’t Dance”) at the Feline Center in Vienna, Virginia, Beau Jocque recounts his introduction to zydeco music, his quick rise in the zydeco world and how he got his Beau Jocque stage persona. Listen to the segment below (which ends with a performance of “Give Me Cornbread”).
